British Army Senior Tournament.
Aldershot, Sunday 5th July.
We travelled to the excellent 50 metre pool at Aldershot for the annual tournament to defend the title that we had won 12 months ago.
We were pleased to take a full squad of 13 to this event to play 2 full 4 quarter matches in a full size deep water pool.
Match 1, Worthing 17, British Army 6
Quarter Scores; - 4-1, 5-2, 4-0, 4-3.
This match was a competitive affair against an Army team who are currently missing a number of players who are deployed in Afghanistan.
We played some good water polo but our man-up opportunities were poorly executed and we missed a number of chances that we probably should have scored from.
All of the squad enjoyed a good amount of water time and Alastair Hardinge was unlucky to be excluded in the third quarter.
Scorers; - Scott Martin 6, Ziggy Tate 4, Joel Abbott 2, Richard Hooper 2, Sam Abbott 1, Stuart Stirling 1, Matt White 1.
Exclusions; - Alastair Hardinge 3, Tony Gray 1, Rob Osborne 1, Scott Martin 1.
Match 2, Worthing 14, Swindon 11.
Quarter Scores; - 3-2, 2-2, 3-3, 6-4.
An exciting match against a well organized and strong opposition who will play in Division 3 of the National League later this year.
We always led but Swindon did draw level at the start of the 4th Quarter. A couple of quick goals, including a rare backhand shot by Stuart Stirling from the centre forward position, settled the nerves.
At times we again played some good water polo but as in the previous match our extra man plays were poor.
That said, we did enough to win what was a very hard fought victory which secured the overall title.
Scorers; - Matt White 6, Scott Martin 3, Ziggy Tate 2, Richard Hooper 2, Stuart Stirling 1.
Exclusions; - Andy Cawdery 2, Adrian Irbe 2, Tony Gray 1, Joel Abbott 1, Alastair Hardinge 1.
Squad in Full at the Army; - Ben Alcorn (G/K), Ziggy Tate, Scott Martin, Stuart Stirling, Joel Abbott, Sam Abbott, Richard Hooper, Tony Gray, Adrian Irbe, Matt White, Andy Cawdery, Rob Osborne, Alastair Hardinge.
