Sussex Senior Knock-out.

Wednesday 3rd June 2009

Worthing 13, Brighton 5 (+ 6 Handicap) 11 . (Quarter Scores; - 2-3, 2-0, 4-2, 5-0)

This was an exciting match against a much improved and spirited Brighton team who played their part in an entertaining fixture.

With a handicap of 6 goals to overcome this always looked to be a difficult fixture and this certainly proved to be the case.

We made a slow start failing to employ the desired tactics and as a result at the end of the first period we trailed 2-3 which was an overall deficit of 2-9.

From this point our play began to improve but we were still guilty of missing far to many simple opportunities which kept score closer than it might have been.

Going into the final period we still trailed 5-8 but a strong finish saw us take a 2 goal lead with just over 2 minutes left to play. As a result we ran the clock down successfully to record a narrow victory.

Ben Alcorn had a fine game in goal including a spectacular penalty save and it was pleasing to see that our squad of 12 included 6 junior players.

The team realized that they had under-performed but credit must go to Brighton who played well for long periods of the match.
