Before I get into the characters, though, I do want to point out that each one will have two ratings: their actual usefulness, and my own, personal, biased rating. These ratings differ in only two ways. The first way is that, for the Usefulness Factor, the higher the number, the more useful they are. For my opinions, the higher the number, the more I think they suck. So, without further ado...

Terra Branford
Age: 18
Looks: Green hair, with a red/purple dress
Race: Half-Esper
Battle Skill: Morph - Transforms Terra into a purple ghost-like creature/doubles all of her stats.
Gaming over-view:
Terra is the main character in the first half of the game, and was controlled by the empire because of her magical powerz. When Locke and Arvis help her to escape, she joins the RETURNERS, a resistance group that wants to stop the Empire at all costs.
Terra will most probably be the character who'll stay in your party the longest. She's mandatory in a lot of the earlier parts of the game, and by the time you regain her in the second half, she should be quite strong. By default, she's a mage-type character, but she can equip swords and her attacks aren't that bad. In terms of usefulness, it varies depending on what you like. Physically, she pales compared to Sabin, but she has the highest magical statistics and she can learn magic without the help of Magicite. It's just more useful if you equip her with them. Train her well, and she'll serve you well.
Endgame Strategy: If you plan to have Terra as part of your final boss team, you'll want to give her stuff so she can unleash all her magic with very little cost. DEFINITELY try to get an Economizer. That'll reduce her magic costs to 1 MP. Imagine blasting out Ultima for ONE MAGIC POINT! That's a deal you can't refuse. Unfortunately, getting the Economizer is a lot of work. Use the Gold Hairpin if you can't get it. Another thing to give her is the Gem Box so she can cast two spells at once. Those two relics will make her the ultimate magician type. If you want, you CAN give her the Offering and a Genji Glove, but I prefer her as a magician. She's just stronger that way.
For spells, make absolute sure she has the following: Flare, Meteor, Cure 3, Life 2, Life 3, and Haste 2. It doesn't matter if you use her for a 'white' or 'black' mage, just make sure she has these spells. They're necessary if you even think you're going to have a chance at beating the last boss. Flare and Meteor, in my opinion, are better than Ultima because they don't kill your team. Life 3 is there for obvious reasons, as are the other spells: to heal you when you're down. Since Terra seems to have the best magic stat, I make her my first mage. Which means she normally has every spell before I go fight Kefka.
Usefulness Factor: 9
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: 1
I love Terra. I think she's the most useful character in the game, and I almost always have her in my party. When I don't, it's because the damn game won't let me. As a result, she's normally on the highest level when I get all of my party members, but in Kefka's Tower, she's normally what saves my party's sorry asses in a fight. The only part about her I don't like is that she doesn't like herself too much. I think she's awesome, and I think she should think she's awesome, too.
Locke Cole
Age: 24
Looks: Gray hair, bandana, blue suit. In other words, a dork.
Battle Skillz: Steal - Steal an opponents' item(s) if they have any. Success rate depends on Locke's level vs. enemy levels.
Capture - Steal an opponents' item and attack at the same time. Must have the Thief's Ring (or is it a glove?) to use.
Gaming over-view:
Locke is the one who saves Terra and Celes from the Empire. He's a noble thief who doesn't steal unless it's to help others or to screw the Empire over. He also hates being called a thief, and insists instead that he's a TREASURE HUNTER! Unfortunately, I've yet to see him actually find any treasure. The one time he does, it ends up being fake.
Locke is more or less a jack-of-all-trades kind of guy. He's not really bad at anything, but he has no specialties, either. His attacks are all right, but his magic is mediocre at best. Give him a Thief's Glove, and basically anything else, and you should be set with him.
Endgame Strategy: This one's hard because, as I've said, Locke's mediocre at best. Still, he does have high speed and he can steal. But Kefka's immune to theft, so even that's a downside for Locke. My advice is to give him whatever crap you don't give your other characters, and make him a physical fighter. Don't even bother with magic, because even with Cure 3, he won't heal more than 1400 HP. And that's not worth the 53 MP cost for Cure 3.
Usefulness Factor: 5
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: 4
I like Locke despite his obvious crappiness. He's just too coooooool. He's suave. And he's a thief. What's better than that? After all, I got a lot of good stuff using his Mug ability, and that made the Arena so much easier to deal with. The only thing I hate is how stupid he is. I mean, seriously? Asking if an airship can crash? If it can move, it can die, too. That's basic physics, after all.
Edgar Roni Figaro
Age: 29
Looks: Blonde hair in a long braid, blue armor. A pretty boy.
Battle Skill: Tool - Edgar uses the tools below to damage his enemies:
Gaming over-view:
Edgar is the womanizing king of Figaro Castle and a figure in the RETURNERS. According to him, even though it appears he's on Kefka's side, he's actually against the mad clown. Oh, and he likes to flirt. A lot. It only really helps him one time, and that time is almost useless, too.
Edgar is probably one of the strongest characters physically in the game. His defense stat is amazing; its base is around 45 - 50, which means he makes an ideal tank to take all those attacks you'll run into. His Tool skill is also very useful. Even around the end of the game, being able to hit multiple targets at once will probably save you some time, and if not, creating a weak point or getting instant death is at least a nice plus. His regular attack is good and he can equip the best weapon/armor in the game. The only thing he lacks is magic, but even that is better than half the other characters. Train Edgar up well, and you'll have a good ally against Kefka. Endgame Strategy: Edgar will most probably be a prime attack force if you don't use Sabin. His Chainsaw will be really useful, and really, anything you give him, he'll probably do. Do give him some White magic, though. Cure 3, Life 2, and Remedy should be his only focus; have someone else buff the party up, because Edgar will be busy attacking the crap out of everything.
Usefulness Factor: 7
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: 2
I really love Edgar. He's almost always in my party, and he's always the one most likely to survive Kefka's Tower. Give this guy decent armor and weapons, and watch him rip your enemies apart in a few seconds. I normally use him as a 'Red Mage' type because his magic really isn't that bad, but you might have different uses for him. He's like a better kind of Locke, just not nearly as fast. Oh, and did I mention his TOOLS?
Sabin Rene Figaro
Age: 29
Looks: Blonde hair in a short ponytail, gray tanktop, and sweatpants. A bodybuilder, according to Terra.
Battle Skill: Blitz - Use an awesome attack by pressing the right button combos. May cause unusual effects. Below are the Blitz moves and effects:
Gaming Over-view:
Sabin is Edgar's twin brother who left Figuro for freedom. He's sometimes immature and makes a few witty remarks, but overall, he's a good guy with a big heart. He's actually the nicer of the two Figaros.
Sabin is definitely the stronger character in this game. He has the highest HP and the best strength of all characters, and he's definitely someone you'll want to give the Offering to. The only problem I have is that he can't use swords, and his defense is relatively low in armor; he just can't equip the good stuff! But if you want anyone to do that +9999 damage count you dream of, this is the man you want.
Endgame Strategy: The only thing this man will need is a Hyper Wrist/Genji Glove and the Offering. The Hyper Wrist is to power him up, but I prefer to have him just wield more weapons. Being able to slash Kefka eight times in a row is sweet. And if that's not enough, Bum Rush should help speed the battle along. However, do NOT give Sabin magic. His magic stats are pure shit, and he's just not a mage. Even Cure 3 won't cure more than 1000 HP, and Sabin has much more use as a fighter. Give him Terrato and Bahamut to add some nice HP and STR bonuses on a level up, but don't bother with the other Espers. Attack is all this man will need.
Usefulness Factor: 8
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: 3
Sabin rocks, and if you see his stats, it's easy to see why. This guy will easily be why you manage to survive half this game, and chances are he'll have the highest kill percentage, too. His Blitz technique is amazing, and some of them kind of make up for his shitty magic stats. The only downside to him, aside from lack of magic, are the controls needed for some of the harder Blitz moves. I mean, just how does one make a diagonal arrow, anyway!?
Bannon
Age: ??
Looks: Old man with a lion's mane, in a red/green robe.
Battle Skill: Health - Restore a little HP to party.
Gaming Over-view:
An old, wise man in charge of the RETURNERS. He helps Terra escape the Empire by bringing her to the Lete River. He dies in Vector when the place is burned down.
Since Bannon is only in the party for a little while, there is no Endgame Strategy. He has no magic, and his attack is very weak. The only use he appears to have is to use Health as a free Cure spell. Also, if he dies, you automatically get a game over. Even if you have a Phoenix Down to revive him.
Usefulness Factor: 1
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: -100
I hate Bannon. With every fiber of my being, I hate him. He's just a bad character. He's weak, he's slow, and he has a poor amount of HP, making the Lete River a challenge indeed. The fact that you get a game over if he dies does it for me; it'd be better if he had an added bonus like some badass tech no one else has, but all he has is Health. And while I'll admit that it's useful when fighting Ultros, it's just a waste of a turn against normal monsters. Did I mention I hate this character?
Mog
Age: 8
Looks: Like a white kitty with wings that walks on two legs.
Battle Skill: Dance - select up to eight different dances for various effects. Each dance has four randomly selected attacks for Mog to use, listed below (god, it's a long list, too):
Gaming Over-view
Mog is the Final Fantasy mascot at this point, and is the most beloved character in the entire series. And why shouldn't he be? He's cute, he's cuddly, and he SLAM DANCES! Unfortunately, he has one drawback to him: if you have him dance, the only way to make him stop is to kill him and revive him. And who could do that to Mog!?
Endgame Strategy: You're going to want to use Mog as a tank more than anything else. Try to find the Snow Muffler, because that will severely lessen the damage Mog will take. Give him any spells or relics you think he needs, because there's no true way to optimally equip Mog; I never used him in the last battle often, and when I did, he died. Do try to get the Holy Lance, though. That seems to be the best weapon for the little guy. Oh, and definitely DO NOT HAVE MOG DANCE! That is guarenteed to get him, and possibly you, killed in a relatively short time.
Usefulness Factor: 6
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: 1 1/2
I love Mog almost as much as Terra. He's just so damn cute! Personally, I think he's one of the best characters even though half his attacks really kind of suck. But come on... he's a Moogle. And who hates Moogles?
Celes Chere
Age: 20
Looks: Blonde hair, in a green leotard with a cape (wears yellow armor in the instruction manual, though)
Battle Skill: Runic - Absorb an enemy spell and receive MP equal to cost of spell (works on ally spells too/only usable if equipped with a sword)
Gaming Over-view
Celes is a battle-hardened, somewhat cold general of the Empire who ends up escaping when Locke comes to rescue her during a chance encounter in South Figaro. At first, she's aloof (especially to Terra and Cyan), but eventually she becomes more soft-hearted and begins to care deeply for her friends.
Celes is just awesome. Her magic pales only to Terra, and her Runic ability can completely shut down any magic casting foe. Fanatics Tower, you may weep now. Aside from her incredible magic arsenal, Celes is physically powerful, as well, and can equip the best equipment in the game. Build her up, and you'll have a powerful force to face against Kefka. Pair her with Terra, and you'll kill Kefka in one turn.
Endgame Strategy: She should be a magician, and should be equipped similarly to Terra, except that you won't be giving her a Gem Box. If Terra has the Economizer, give Celes the Gold Hairpin and an Earrings. If Terra has the Gold Hairpin and you don't have an Economizer, give Celes two Earrings. Now, for her first turn, make Celes cast Quick on herself (learn it from Raiden) so she can also cast two spells per turn. This will make healing or fighting much easier for you. If Terra is with you, use Celes as a White Mage because she'll probably be a little faster than Terra. If Terra's not with you, Celes should just start throwing Flares, Meteors, and Ultimas until either your team dies, Kefka dies, or she runs out of MP. If she dies, have someone revive her quickly. Celes WILL be a part of your end team, if you're smart.
Usefulness Factor: 9
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: 5
I like Celes. She's always been one of the fastest characters, and aside from Terra, she's the best magic-user, too. She's also very strong physically, and tends to be around the same level as Terra in my game. I use her very often, and on her own, she seems to gain a lot better spells than Terra, and learns the more powerful ones quicker. Sadly, though, I still like Terra a bit more.
Shadow
Age: ??
Looks: Like a ninja.
Battle Skill: Throw - throw useless weapons or ninja stars at enemies. Different THROW items have many effects, such as fire damage, critical damage, or making Shadow disappear.
Gaming Over-view
Shadow is a rather cold character who is said to 'slit his mother's throat for a nickel.' But for the right price, he does help the team often. Unfortunately, he never stays for long. You don't really learn much about him unless you manage to save him from the Floating Continent, so is there more to Shadow than you think?
Shadow is undoubtedly one of the fastest characters, if not, then the fastest there is. Not only that, but his evasion stat is insane. He doesn't even need armor, he's so damn evasive. Wait... I lied. He does need armor. He's also good as both a physical fighter and a magic-user, something that I find useful in this game. His THROW skill will probably be what saves you in the first half of the game, but it does cost a lot of money to keep this guy outfitted. I mean, hell, you have to give him 3000 GP just to get him to join you. Even then, he'll still leave after a while.
Endgame Strategy: I don't actually have one because I never really use Shadow in the last battle. In fact, in my first game, I didn't even save him from the Floating Continent. But if you're going to use him, keep him as a physical fighter unless you really don't find the need to drag Terra and Celes with you (which I think is stupid, but I digress...). Because his magic stat is higher than most of the 'brawlers' in this game, you really could keep him as a magician if you wanted. But his THROW skill really does come in handy, and his dog is an added attack, too. And because those rely on his strength, not magic, to do damage, I always opt to make Shadow a fighter.
Usefulness Factor: 6
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: 3
Shadow's one of the better characters in the game, but his big downside is getting him. When he does join you, he normally wants a pretty heavy price for his services, and around Sabin's solo scenario, 3000 GP is a lot to shell out. But it's worth it. Even worse than that, though, is that if you fail to save Shadow on the Floating Continent, you'll never see him again. I'll explain the conditions for saving his sorry ass later, though.
Cyan Garamond
Age: 50
Looks: Like a blue knight with a ponytail.
Battle Skill: SrdTech - Use a different SrdTech by waiting a certain amount of time. List below:
Gaming Over-view
Cyan is the loyal retainer to the king of Doma, and one of the kingdom's most powerful knights. But when Kefka poisons his family, he vows to avenge them all. During the course of the game, he talks like an old, distinguished gentleman, and chances are you'll be seeing the word 'Thou' a million times.
Not a lot of people like Cyan, but I think he's a good character to have. He might be slower than Sabin, but he's stronger and his magic is just a little bit better. He's also another candidate to hold the Offering and a Genji Glove. And if not, then I normally give him things that increase defense so he can take more damage.
Endgame Strategy: Do NOT make Cyan a magician. Let me say that now. If you even bother to try, Cyan will let you down. He's just not built to use magic, and his 47-ATK stat should tell you this. I normally use him as a tank while Terra and Celes prepare their spells. And if I'm too bored to bring Sabin, I give him the Offering so he can at least hit Kefka a few times before either he or someone else dies.
Usefulness Factor: 3
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: 6
I love Cyan, but I don't give him a high rating because I don't use him that much. For me, the key to using Cyan is to understand his biggest strength. And that's in beating the living crap out of things with a sword. People seem to have trouble with this, but not every character in the game is supposed to use magic. I've actually managed to turn Cyan into a very strong physical fighter, and he's the reason I've beaten a few bosses. His SrdTechs, while costing a long time to use, actually do a very high amount of damage for no MP. And I like that. Besides, how many men do you know that say 'Thou?'
Gau
Age: 13
Looks: Like a green-haired boy in animal skins.
Battle Skillz: Rage - Use an attack used by the list of enemies selected.
Leap - Learn different attacks from enemies. (Only usable on the Veldt)
Gaming Over-view
The wild boy who was thrown onto the Veldt and raised by wild animals when he was a baby. He has no memory of his family, and can communicate freely with all animals. According to the game, his eyes shine with intelligence.
Using Gau can be a high gamble, especially at the end of the game. He doesn't have any actual attack; instead, you select a list of monsters whose attacks he can 'mimic,' via the Rage command. And therein lies the gamble. While you might sometimes get some nice spells like Fire 3 or Plasma for no MP, you're more likely to get some pretty half-assed attack that doesn't do much of anything. And the even bigger downside is that, if Gau does manage to use an enemy spell, it only does half the normal damage anyway. In my opinion, the only thing he's good for is learning magic. In the Anthology version, you're able to equip him with Espers. Do so, and you might find a use for Gau.
Endgame Strategy: I don't have one, because I NEVER use Gau in my last battle party. I don't believe in making it easy to get a game over.
Usefulness Factor: 1
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: 10
I hate Gau. I hate him more than I hate Bannon, and I really hated Bannon. This guy is probably the most useless character the game could've thrown at us, and I really don't see what point he has other than to help Sabin one time. He would've been better off as an NPC in my opinion, because none of his attacks really ring much of a bell in my heart. I guess he's fun if you have hours to spend getting all his Rage techniques, but I prefer leveling up over playing with this character.
Setzer Gabbiani
Age: 27
Looks: Like a cooler, aristocratic version of Sephiroth. With an airship.
Battle Skillz: Slot - A random spin with random effects. Effects listed below:
GP Rain - Does damamge equal to the amount of GP you have with you. 3000 GP - 3000 damages (need Coin Toss item).
Gaming Over-view
The compulsive gambler in the game, Setzer often frequents the local bars where he makes his fortune and brags about his airships. He once had a girlfriend who decided to use her own airship to fly into the sun. Oh good god, why didn't he even try and stop her?
Setzer is a hard character to dedicate to any one job, because he's like Locke; he's good for pretty much anything, but not exceptional at anything, too. Personally, I keep him as a magician, because his attacks are neither strong nor reliable in any way. He's also good for soaking up damage, because he can use some pretty decent armor. But here's his biggest flaw: Joker Doom. If he casts it, and I guarantee that he will on boss battles, you will automatically get a Game Over unless you put Life3 on someone. If you plan on using Setzer, make sure you save often. After all, it's never safe to play with gamblers.
Endgame Strategy: I've used Setzer just once in the end battle, and he was always the 'white mage' for me, even in normal fights. There's not much to do with this guy, since you'll probably be giving your best stuff to Terra, Celes, or Sabin. For me, I just gave him two Hero Rings and let him sit in the back row, throwing his cards and casting his spells. Apparently, some of his cards can cast poison, death, and the like, but they've never done that for me.
Usefulness Factor: 4
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: 6
I actually like Setzer, but I never really bring him anywhere plot-related because of his high chances of getting me killed. To me, he's more a novelty than anything else. The few times I do have him, he almost always got a Joker Doom either near a boss, in a boss battle, or so far away from a save point that it just wasn't funny. My best advice is this: either save often or don't even use his Slot attack.
Strago Magus
Age: Old as all hell should just about cover that
Looks: Like an old man in a red robe.
Battle Skill: Lore - Use a spell specifically learned by enemies (Blue Magic). The list is too long, though, so I'm not listing it.
Gaming Over-view
Strago is Relm's grandfather, and one of the prominent figures in Thamasa, a magic-using town. He's considered an old fuddy-duddy by Relm, but there's more to his story than you think.
If I have to actually tell you that Strago is a magician, I think I need to go down there and beat you senseless. This guy has some good magic, and if equipping an Esper doesn't seem right, he can still learn Blue Magic by being hit with enemy attacks. But here's the downside: Strago needs to survive said attack to learn it, and he has some shitty HP stats. There's really not much you can do about this, but let's face it. There's just not much you can do with Strago period. His attack is the weakest in the game, so don't even try making him a physical fighter unless you want to spend hours and hours sitting on your ass, just to throw your controller into your TV screen.
Endgame Strategy: I've never used Strago, because every other character before him always survived. But I would make him a magician and let him serve as a white mage/blue mage hybrid. His White Wind and Mighty G spells are really useful against the end boss, and if you find you NEED everyone to be in full health before Kefka uses Grand Train, you can use Pep Up to fix that. Sure, Strago will die from that attack, but it's not like he did much good, either.
Usefulness Rating: 2
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: 8
Ick. I really do NOT like using Strago. Despite what his stats say, I find him to be rather weak in magic usage, and I really prefer using Terra or Celes for magic spells. He's an okay backup if you need to control three parties at once and find yourself running short of spells, but I almost never relied solely on this character to provide me with magical backup. The only good thing he can do is use Lore, and most of his spells are high-cost at that. Pick and choose where you use Strago, and you might not get frustrated with him.
Relm Arrownay
Age: 11
Looks: Like a cute, little blonde kid in a red bandana and a black and yellow dress.
Battle Skillz: Sketch - Sketch an enemy and use its attacks selected randomly.
Control - Posess an enemy and use a selected attack on either friend or foe. (Fake Mustache required)
Gaming Over-view
Relm is Strago's granddaughter, and a good friend of Shadow's dog, Interceptor. She's also an artist with amazing ability; anything she sketches seems almost lifelike. She gets kidnapped by an aristocrat at one point, but all he wants is for her to paint his portrait and make him look not so goddamn ugly.
Relm is another magician character, and she has the highest magic stat of everyone, including Terra and Celes. As such, she makes a magnificent source of magical damage. Give her all the best Espers and spells you can, and she'll use them to their full advantage. Her weapons often have really nice status effects, too, such as healing HP when she attacks, or casting Fire2 in battle for free. And though her Sketch/Control ability isn't useful by the time you do get her, she's elemental if you want to get all of Strago's lores and not waste hours trying to get that one attack that the Rhodite just won't use.
Endgame Strategy: Magician. She has no other uses, and magic (along with Bum Rush) is the key to killing Kefka really quickly. It doesn't matter if she heals or deals damage, because her high magic stats will ensure that, no matter which way you go, she'll heal or hit for the highest damage. If you don't like the thought of Terra or Celes taking all the best gear, definitely hand Relm the Gem Box and the Gold Hairpin. And do NOT use Sketch or Control. Needless to say, Kefka's completely immune to both skills.
Usefulness Factor: 7
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: 4
Relm's an okay character. I don't tend to use her much because I like Terra and Celes a lot more. But if magical damage is your thing, by all means, take Relm along. By the time you reach Kefka's Tower, she'll be an intricate part to any party as the selected 'mage,' so long as she's not with Terra or Celes. The only downside is how late in the game you get her. Relm's stats are actually good, but by that time, she's on such a lower level because you've played with everyone else more. I guess for me, I don't have an overly strong opinion.
Umaro
Age: ??
Looks: Like a sasquatch.
Battle Skill: ??? - I don't think he has one.
Gaming Over-view
Not much to say here because Umaro's an optional character and boss. He has a high damage count, but you can't actually control him; he attacks with whatever he feels, and this may or may not help you out. Equipping him with the Blizzard Orb increases his magic stat (which is entirely useless, since he doesn't use magic) and allows him to use an ice attack. Equipping him with the Rage Ring gives him more Vigor. Personally, I just give him the Rage Ring and leave it at that.
Endgame Strategy: There is none. Not only do I NOT use him in the last battle, you can't control him, anyway.
Usefulness Factor: 1
Nekogal's Biased Opinion
Personal Rating: 10
Not much of an opinion, since I rarely, if at all, use him. He doesn't really have enough to make me want to use him, because he can't even be controlled. My advice is to not even bother unless you're a perfectionist who NEEDS to get every character in the game.
Gogo
Age: ???
Looks: Covered entirely in robes.
Battle Skill: Mimic - Copy the last move taken (friend or foe).
Gaming Over-view
Gogo's another optional character, and he can be hard to get if your timing is bad. It's a mystery as to who he is, because no one knows anything about him. There are rumors that he might be Gehstahl, Kefka, or Gau's mother, but I'm pretty sure he's just Gogo. After all, there was a Gogo on Final Fantasy V...
If I can remember, you do have some level of control with Gogo. I believe he can learn magic, but his real talent is Mimicking someone. When he does, he doesn't appear to use MP (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), so if you need some extra healing or want to cast another Meteor at no cost, he's your man.
Endgame Strategy: I have to be honest. I never used Gogo for more than a few battles. If you DO use him, just have him Mimic. He might get some crap attacks in, but overall, nothing beats casting the strong spells for no MP. Just be aware that there are much better characters to use, and if you're forced into using Gogo, then you weren't going to beat the game, anyway.

Ugh... I never really use Gogo, and when I do, he doesn't have much use unless he Mimics someone. He's more for entertainment than dishing out any actual damage. If his stats were any better, I'd have more of an opinion, but he's probably one of the weakest characters in the game. He's a good ally if you're looking to double up on Cure spells, but other than that, I wouldn't waste the party slot. Stick with someone else.
Leo
Age: 30's
Looks: Like a cross between Edgar and Sabin, with brown hair.
Gaming Over-view
There's not much overview here, because you only play as Leo for a few minutes, in one fight. He's not even really that powerful, but he does have some nice attacks at his disposal. Unfortunately, none of them work, because you use him when you have to fight Kefka. And you know the rule about killing villains in one blow... right? Sadly, this guy gets chunked after about five minutes of playing as him. Which is sad. He could've been my friend, if he wasn't my enemy.
Kefka
Age: ??
Looks: Like a scary clown in nice clothing.
Gaming Over-view
Kefka, Kefka, Kefka... instantly a Final Fantasy classic, I think it's just sad that he's only in one game. For a villain, this guy's got it made. He's crazy, he's a wiseass, and he acheives nearly godlike status before you have to go and kill him. Unfortunately, though, even with all of that, he's still not a very good final battle. He has some really insanely powerful attacks, but even then, I still beat him in less than ten minutes. You probably can, too.
Personal Rating: 1
Let's face it. Who the hell can hate this guy? Sure, he's criminally insane and he destroys everything and everyone, but what other villain manages to nearly succeed with his plan and destroy the entire world? If you argue that Sephiroth did, then I might need to go down and blast you with the Light of Judgment, just like Kefka would. This guy is one of my favorite characters. If he was a good guy, he'd have been the best.
Okay, it's safe to say we all love HP, strength, and magic and we want more of it. How do you get the uber strong characters that can beat Kefka into the dirt faster than you can say 'spoony bard?' Well, strong weapons help, but the real power lies in the Espers. And no, not by using them. Some of these bad boys have what's called 'level up bonuses' that are awarded to the character when they're equipped, upon leveling up. Each Esper has a different bonus, such as an increase in strength or more HP. And because we want to kill everything in sight, I'll be happy to list them for you, as well as where to find them and who would benefit most with them.

So, you're a crazy fanatic who HAS to get 100% on everything in the game, eh? Well, so am I, and that's why I'm here to help you. Some people have a hard time finding Shadow in the World of Ruin, and there's a very good reason for that: he actually dies if you don't save him from the Floating Continent. But how do you do that? It's actually simple, and it's actually hard at the same time. When Shadow leaves you on the Floating Continent, you'll have roughly ten minutes to haul ass before you're chunked. But right before you get to the airship, you need to stop if you want to get Shadow. The trick is that, when you're near the end of the continent, you'll need to wait until the counter reaches down to six seconds. I'm not kidding. Shadow will show up, and you'll have to talk to him. Then you'll really need to get off the continent. With only six seconds to do this, it might take quite a few tries to get it right. If you have an emulator, it's much easier to do this. Otherwise, you'll need to be very quick to get Shadow.
After that, you'll need to save him in the Veldt cave. Make sure to grab the Striker; you need this to get Shadow. Kill the Behemoth who attacks you, and use a Revivify on the undead Behemoth. When you wake up in Thamasa, head to the Coliseum, and bet the Striker. If you don't have it, go get it from the Veldt cave. Shadow will be your opponent when you bet it. Kick his ass and he'll join you.
Also note that you do not necessarily need to get Shadow if you want to see his ending. I believe if you see seven of Shadow's 'dreams' through the course of the game, you'll get an ending where he lives regardless of if you save him or not. This might just be a rumor; I've never even encountered any of these dreams. But many people have protested that Shadow does live. If anyone can confirm this, send me an email.
I don't see why you'd want to get this guy, because personally, he's not an overly good character. But all the more power to you if you like him. Getting him is a pain in the ass. But here's how you do it: First, you can ONLY get Gogo in the World of Ruin. Don't even bother until you get Daryl's airship (the Falcon) to do it. Once you have the airship, travel to Triangle Island. It will literally be a triangle-shaped island on your map; use that to help you, as I can't provide specific directions. Once there, walk around until you encounter an enemy called Zone Eater. They're frequent here, and their only attack is to swallow your party members. You'll want this, even if it looks like you're being wiped out. When all of your party members are 'swallowed,' they'll wake up inside of the Zone Eater.
Now comes the harder part. The Zone Eater is comprised of a series of mazes, and if you have terrible timing issues, you're going to want to quit while you're ahead. The first part is easy. You'll be faced with rope bridges that have guards on them. Ignore the guards, if you can. If you don't, you'll be thrown onto a lower level (which is easy to get back from). Get past the rope bridges and you'll come to the harder part: the falling ceiling puzzle. This actually took me a few tries, because if you get crushed, you get a Game Over. Take advantage of the Save Point before this part of the dungeon. When you're ready, go on and face the falling ceiling. Let the treasure chests be your guide; standing right in front of them will keep you safe from the ceiling. There are two tiny areas where you'll need to guess where the safe spot is, but if you're fast enough, you should be able to make it to the next space in time. If not, then I'll help you here, too: Go seven paces left of the second treasure chest, and two down. That's guessing spot number one. The second is a bit easier to find. Use the third chest as your guide, and when you see it, head to the right-most corner of the ledge behind the chest. If you aren't wearing sprint shoes, don't bother with the third chest. Nothing good's in there, anyway.
When you conquer the ceiling room, the last puzzle you'll find is one where you'll be jumping across ledges using opened treasure chests. This one's easy; I won't even explain it because it's hard to get lost. At the end, you'll finally find Gogo. Just talk to him, and he'll join you. When you're done, feel free to warp out. Warp does work here.
Honestly, this has to be the worst side-quest in Final Fantasy VI, and the only reason anyone would try to find Umaro would be for completion points. Before you attempt this, you will need three things. You'll need access to Narshe, you'll need to beat Tritoch, and you'll need Mog. Umaro won't even show up unless Mog's with you.
Head to Narshe, and go to the hills where you first fought Kefka. Head all the way up, and kick Tritoch's ass. He's weak against fire, and if you have Terra and Celes with Fire2, he'll be dead in about three rounds. After you kill him, there'll be an opening where he once sat. Jump into it, and you'll fall into Umaro's cave. This place is confusing. First order of business: ignore the chests all along the cave. A lot of them contain Pugs, and these guys are NOT nice. Instead, opt to fall down any of the many pitfalls dotting the room you land in. You'll want to go this way. You'll drop into a lower level. There aren't many places to go here, so follow the path and take the left 'fork' in the road through the doorway. The right path is a dead end. In the next room, you'll see two switches. One will be before the bridge you'll see; ignore that one. Cross the bridge and pull the second switch. You'll fall again, and this time you'll land in Umaro's room.
Examine the skull in the center of the room, and take out the Magicite in it. This will make Umaro angry, and he'll come out and attack you. Beat him with Fire2. And when you win... he'll join you if Mog's in your party. Feel free to warp when you're done.
No, this isn't a walkthrough, either. In the World of Ruin, you can actually try stopping Kefka as soon as you get Setzer back in your party. It's a stupid thing to do, but you can try. But if you're like me, you'll want to have three full parties before even attempting this suicide mission. That's cool. This is where I'll list where you can find everyone to help you along. Note that Sabin, Edgar, Celes, and Setzer aren't listed because they join automatically for story purposes.
Well, not much else to say after that, since I basically covered what to do with, how to train, and where to find every character in the game. With that in mind, go on and play a few hours. Go find the Tintinabar. Go slay some dragons. But please, don't harm any moogles in your adventure. What kind of heartless bastard could hurt moogles!? ~ Nekogal #3
