***** - The best anime I've ever seen, and one highly recommended. It has both depth and grace to the plot, and the characters will keep you hooked with their wild and varying personalities. With great music and great animation, it's hard not to like these.
**** - Very awesome anime. It's hard to find a flaw, but there is something that brings its score from 5 to 4. These are incredibly enjoyable shows and are ones I watch no matter how old they are. With good plot and good characters, you'll be entertained for hours. Or, if you're like me, you'll stretch out the watching for even more fun.
*** - These are okay, but they're not in league with being the best. There tend to be many dubbing problems and/or translation errors, and the plot isn't very well done. The characters can still save the anime, but this is, in its core, an average show. You probably won't want to watch for more than a few short hours.
** - Mediocre at its best. These shows have a tendency to have very poor plot, poor planning, too many fillers, and not enough characterization to be described as anything other than 'garden variety.' There isn't much to save an anime with this rating, but with an open mind, you might find this enjoyable.
* - It's very hard for an anime to get this rating, but if it does, rest assured that it's probably the lamest piece of crap that could've been pumped out of Japan. There is no redeeming quality to these shows, and not even remake would save it from spending eternity in the pits of hell. I post shows with this rating up as a warning *coughNarutocough*, and not as something I'd ever think others would enjoy.
Death Note: Ha. I never thought I'd be putting a review for Death Note up here, but after seeing more than half the series (and reading the manga to see what I managed to miss), I think this deserves some credit. Let's say there are beings known as Death Gods living in another world. Let's say one of them decided to drop his notebook for his own amusement. Let's say a kid finds it. What does he do? Well, in Light Yagami's case, he becomes Kira, the 'god of the new world' and he begins his reign by killing any criminal he sees by writing their name down. When the Japanese Police become involved, along with 'L', the greatest detective in the world, Kira races to outsmart and try to kill them all. He manages to off L only to deal with two more adversaries who might be even more dangerous to his cause. It can get a little repetitive (especially in the manga), but overall, it's a great anime to watch, especially late at night. The only downside is how long it seems to take for things to happen (especially concerning the manga, and with the exception of a certain blonde man who wields a chocolate bar).
Rating: ****
Samurai Pizza Cats: I should've put this up earlier, because this is an instant classic. Now, we all love cats, right? We think they're the best damn things since sliced cheese. Well, what if these lovable creatures gained super powers in order to save the world? What if they did it while running a pizza shop? In Samurai Pizza Cats, that's just the case. With his group of kitty crime-fighters, Yattorou constantly saves Japan from the forces of evil whenever he isn't making pizza for his hungry customers! Unfortunately, because I have trouble finding most of the episodes, my review is somewhat limited, but from what I've seen, I recommend this to anyone who loves everything old-school, and for people who love cats, too.
Rating: ****
Yu-Gi-Oh GX: I'm sorry to say that while this show is all right, it's nowhere near as good as Yu-Gi-Oh was. Basically, it's the same, with the main character (Juudai) dueling his way out of his troubles. A lot of the characters even resemble many of the old YGO cast, which brings the rating down even more. This just seems like a watered-down version of YGO, with no actual plot given specifically. Sadly, because it was taken off the air in Albany around 2006, I haven't yet seen past season 2, so bear with me on this review.
Rating: ***
Yu-Gi-Oh (redone): Now don't get excited, I almost never redo reviews, but this show severely needed it from my last one. A young boy named Yuugi is given a mysterious puzzle to solve, which takes him eight years to do so. When he does solve it, his world is turned upside-down as the Nameless Pharaoh (Yami) enters his life, in the form of a 3000-year-old spirit. Together with this spirit, and with his best friends, Yuugi must set out to find the Pharaoh's memories, and to discover his destiny to save the world. But, with villains like Maximillion Pegasus, Malik Ishtar, and even his own friend, Ryou (who has an evil item that releases Yami Bakura), it most certainly won't be easy. But through it all, Yuugi always remembers that friendship will prevail.
Rating: *****
Chromarti High: This is a weird one! I've only seen a few episodes, so my opinion might seem biased. There doesn't seem to be much plot overall. The episodes stand well on their own, and put together, the whole series is insane. Basically, you have highschoolers who deal with rivals from different schools, and stuff like that. Normal, eh? Well, what if your best friend was a sensitive robot, and your school has to deal with aliens? And what if you look like you're 50!? That's the case in this anime!
Rating: ***
D.N.Angel: I have to admit, I prefered the manga more, but the anime is still awesome. 14-year-old Daisuke Niwa is descended from a family of artwork thieves, who give him missions and train him to become the best thief in existence. But not because they're greedy. No, for on poor Daisuke's shoulders lie the legend that any boy in his family may because the great Dark Mousy, the greatest thief who ever lived. From stealing artwork, to stealing womens' hearts, follow the adventures of Daisuke and Dark as they evade Krad, Satoshi, and many others in this brilliant work, while at the same time trying to attract the attention of Riku and Risa, their fellow classmates.
Rating: *****
Excel Saga: If you're looking for a weird anime, nothing gets weirder than this one. And since the maker gives permission to turn the anime into anything, I can't really put it in any genre in particular. One day, Excel Excel is about to leave school when she's suddenly killed in a freak accident. Unable to actually remember what happened or why, she wakes up and falls madly in love with the leader of ACROSS, an organization bent on dominating The World. Through her love, Excel is sent on various dangerous, and often mishap-riddled missions that make no sense whatsoever! And with her partner, Hyatt, always a step away from death, Excel is most often than not forced to do things her own way. Throw a zombie horde, an evil mob, and cute bear-like creatures that go 'puuchuu,' and that's Excel Saga for you.
Rating: *****
Gravitation: A yaoi anime, so I'll state right here that it's not for children. Band leader Shuuichi Shindo falls in love with novelist Erie Yuki, but the match is anything but made in heaven. For, when Erie agrees to take Shuuichi, the band suffers from his constant inability to focus. Not to mention that his love interest has attracted a certain amount of bad attention. Erie Yuki is cold-hearted and doesn't care when Shuuichi is beaten up because of their relationship, but when Shuuichi's friend tells him off, Erie leaves to try and commit suicide. A love-struck Shuuichi rushes to stop him, and true love does prevail.
Rating: ***
Yu Yu Hakusho: This is a good anime for people who love fighting. Basically, the hero (Yusuke) dies by protecting a kid from being run over and becomes a Spirit Detective, protecting humans from any demons or unworldly creatures that happen to threaten them. Before he can do that, however, first he must pass a test and prove himself a noble soul by hatching a 'spirit egg.' If it turns into a monster, he'll be forced into hell and can never 'revive' himself again. But if it hatches into an angel, he'll become a Spirit Detective. Teamed up with demons, healers, and classmates, can Yusuke save the world from the forces of darkness? From forces that can't even be seen?
Rating: *****
Final Fantasy United: This is a very cute anime, and has slight references to the FF series. Two kids and a young lady go searching for their parents with help from a mysterious guy and Boco the Chocobo. If you've played Final Fantasy V for the SNES, you'll recognize many faces and some characters descending from the game's party members. For the FF fanatic, it's a must-see.
Rating: ****
Witch Hunter Robin: A lovely anime I found late one night a few years ago. Unfortunately, I've seen only two episodes, but from what I've seen, a woman named Robin (assuming that she was accused as a witch, but escaped harm) now works for an organization bent on hunting down anyone relating to the occult. From what I've seen, it looks promising, and I would tell others to watch it, or to at least consider it.
Rating: ****
Cowboy Bebop movie: Okay, so it's not the show, but the movie was great! It was a little freaky and there are some swears in it. But if you're into gun fights and dark beings destroying the earth, this movie's for you! Basically, you have Spike and his allies fighting an experiment named Vincent who is destroying the earth using something that causes people to combust randomly. A not-so-great plan is executed and the good guys win!
Rating: ***
Chobits: This is a cute one by far. It is about college student Hedeki and how he finds a persicom (robot resembling a human, to the point of developing feelings for their end users) named Chii in the trash. Chii can only say her name, so Hideki must go through hell and back to teach her how to speak and communicate with him. But with a persicom that knows nothing about the world of humans, will an unassuming student like Hideki survive such an endeavor?
Rating: *****
Digimon 4th season: This one is seriously advanced compared to the other seasons. The group is smaller, but they actually turn into digimon! At first, they have to find Ophanimon, but then they have to save her when they do, and not all goes well, as per usual in the Digi realm. When they finally end up failing at that, they must beat Cherubimon, who was behind her kidnapping. After they kicked his butt, they now must save the digital world from the Royal pain-in-the-ass Knights (deemed simply as the Royal Knights), and Lucemon, who had brought an even more sinister plot for the Digi Destined. In no way follows any of the previous seasons, but stands on its own quite well.
Rating: ****
Pokemon Advanced: Basically, like the original pokemon, but a bit better. Ash has a much more serious attitude toward training his pokemon, and the adventures just seem to flow a bit better. Unfortunately, Misty doesn't appear to be around anymore, her place being taken by May, a young trainer who prefers contests as opposed to outright battling. But Team Rocket is still around to plague Ash, and with his record, it'll still take a million years to reach the Hoenn's Pokemon Elite.
Rating: *****
Beyblade: This is a cute anime! Five kids known as the Blade Breakers have to stop an organization called Team Psychic from capturing creatures known as Bit Beasts. Along the way, they meet friends like Hilary, Zeo, and Wyatt. Some of their foes become their friends! However, for now, their main target are two wily bladers named King and Queen.
Rating: ****
//Hack.Sign: I've only seen this a few times, because it was on waaaaaay past when I wanted to be up. The .Hack series follows tales of players from The World, a virtual game online that comes so out of control that it takes control of the end users themselves, while the game itself corrupts from various viruses. For what I've seen, I'd definitely spend time looking online for episodes. Because of that, it does get a fairly high ranking here.
Rating: ****
Inuyasha: At first glance, a lot of people like this anime. I personally didn't, because I was much more into the Ronin Warriors and Pokemon. I believe this anime takes place in two different time zones, with a well being the gateway between both times. Inuyasha, a demon, meets with a schoolgirl named Kagome, and from there, they gather a group of merry men (and women, too) to battle the forces of Sesshoumaru and Naraku. It was okay for the first couple of seasons, but with the extreme length of episodes, you might start wondering when the series ends, if ever. I know I did, and I still do.
Rating: **
Teen Titans: At first glance, you're probably wondering why the hell I'm even putting this up here, since it's not an anime. I personally don't really know why, either. But here we are. Teen Titans follows Robin (yes, from Batman) in his teenage years as he battles his way through waves of enemies, most too bizarre to be named. With his friends (StarFire, Raven, Cyborg, and Beast Boy), he strikes out to keep the city absolutely safe from would-be Gotham villains. Pretty funny and a nice distraction, unfortunately if you watch too much of it, your brains WILL leak out your ears.
Rating: *****
Rurouni Kenshin: Unfortunately, I have not seen much of this Anime, but what I have seen, I love. It is about a samurai who must go up against his worst enemies to stop Lord Shishio. Luckily, he has his friends by his side all the way.
Rating: ****
Megaman NT Warrior: This one just appeared on May 17, so I don't know alot about it except that a kid named Lan is armed with a PET (personal terminal) containing a netnavi called Megaman, and they must destroy the evil Dr. Wily (from the old MM games) before he destroys the world.
Rating: ****...so far...
Gundam Wing: Not overly spectacular, but not a bad anime, either. Like RW, Gundam Wing is placed in the hands of five young men, each one controlling a different robot titan to save the world (or is it worlds?) from the evil organization of OZ. Meanwhile, Relena, heiress to the Sanc Kingdom, must do what she can to retain peace on Earth while Heero and his team fights off the villain from afar. In the end, all is safe, but the going is definitely not easy. A very nice sci-fi sort of scene, but unfortunately, as the years drag on, I don't exactly remember all the detailing here. Sorry about that one, guys.
Rating: *****
Ronin Warriors: There was a legend where, when the evil Dynasty appeared once again to enslave the world, the five legendary Ronin Warriors would reawaken to rid the world of Talpa's evil. Unfortunately for the world, the Ronins are five young, not-so-hardy boys who barely seem to even know what they're doing before an evil guard from Talpa pays them a visit. But in the end, even though they normally seem to get very badly beaten, the Ronins do prevail. But even with their virtuous armor (named after many of Confusius's virtues), along with the guidance of the Ancient One, can they finally end Talpa's reign of horror once and for all!?
Rating: *****
Sailor Moon: Another oldeschool classic from yours truly. Serena is a normal girl until she learns one day that she is a Sailor Scout, and the Princess of what used to be the Moon Kingdom. As such, she must fight evil and recruit the other four Sailor Scouts to save the world and learn about her past, and the mysterious power of the Silver Crystal. With allies like Tuxedo Mask and MiniMoon, the going will be tough, but friendship and love always prevails! Besides, she is the one called Sailor Moon, after all.
Rating: ***
Outlaw Star: I loved this, despite missing many of the episodes. From what I've seen, it might be classified as a sci-fi/action anime. So, we have Gene Starwind on board a space ship (which he seems to have been in constant debt for), and with his friends, each from a different world, they must fight and treasure hunt their way to riches, fame, and fortune. All the while, they must protect Melfina, a mysterious android, from the mysterious clutches of a man named 'Henry.' Can Gene Starwind survive such an endeavor!?
Rating: *****-***************
Pokemon: An age-old, slightly glamourized show, to be sure. It's geared highly for the younger audiences, but I personally find this show to be really cute, if not a little repetitive. Ash Ketchum, a 10-year-old boy from Pallet, leaves home to begin a journey to become a pokemon Master. Unfortunately, a nearly-constant series of mishaps prevents that from happening. With a rival like Gary, and with the ever-stubborn Team Rocket on his heels, Ash needs more than his wit to win THESE battles. And unfortunately for him, wit isn't his strong-point. Gets highly repetitive, and the story has a tendency to dip, but overall, it's a lovely show and there's not too much violence. Then again, what did we expect from a show for little kids?
Rating: ***
Digimon: The first two seasons were by far my favorite, but I'm overviewing as much as possible here. Okay, so we have seven kids who go to camp and instead, end up being sucked into a digital world where they are quickly befriended by their destined 'Digimon,' or digital monsters. They learn that they are the Digi-Destined, and are the only ones who can save the world. Together with their monsters, they fight hordes of evil Digimon, while trying to save both the 'real' and digital worlds. Season two was a branch-off of season 1, where Kari and T.K take the center stage. With new friends alongside them, they now venture in the world to stop the 'Digimon Emperor,' an evil human who uses and abuses Digimon for his own causes. Unfortunately, season 3 was terrible. I tried to give it a chance, but it failed by episode 3. All I can say is that it was too serious, the puns were lame, and I wouldn't even bother looking for it on Youtube. But if you want some oldschool fun, I would recommend watching the first and second seasons.
Rating: First two seasons: **** Third season: *
