Manila Bay is famous for its beautiful and spectacular sunset. They say, the park used to be a favorite area for tourists and locals...a nice place to spend after the day’s work or doze on a lazy afternoon. I didn't grow up here and I didn't know how it looked in the old days.
It was only until recently that I visited the place...with the new life that has grown in it. I couldn’t believe how a barren park that lost its appeal to most people turned into a lively promenade along Roxas Boulevard. The strip that runs between the US Embassy and Manila Yatch Club is now known as Manila Baywalk.
We dropped off from a taxi near Aristocrat Restaurant in Malate one Sunday evening to experience the renowned beauty of Manila Bay. It was around nine but it seemed that people just started coming in.
Everyone would notice the colorful and luminous light structures that stand so great wishing and welcoming every guest with warmth and delight. Couples and families occupied almost all benches arranged fronting the bay, perfect for those who would want to watch the sunset. The old coconut trees were preserved and beautifully landscaped. Children were busy running here and there. Teenagers were chanting and the others were playing. Wooden seesaw houses were among the favorite points.
The wall is made of granite tiles and the floor of terra cotta blocks with a combination of ceramics and granite tiles. I’m sure it would be a very ideal place for morning joggers. There are also chess table sets for those who love to play and enjoy a coffee break.
When you’re in the mood of dining outdoors, the bay’s bars and restaurants offer a variety of snacks, drinks and refreshment. The Anthology by the Bay offered too live band performances for its customers. Prices were quite acceptable, P20 to P25 for a can of softdrink. Grilled and roasted chicken and pork were also available. The usual balot and candy vendors were around places.
Of course you can bring you own food to make it cheaper and hey, don’t forget your colorful picnic blankets for your family. Don’t forget to bring your favorite gameboard too. If your kids have bikes or trikes, bring them as well.
They would surely love to treadle.
The giant fountain in front of the Malate Church is a great section for those who would want to freshen up by watching the sparkling waters and lights. Don’t worry about parking spaces because they are well provided near the Embassy. One traffic lane is also intended for parking after rush-traffic hours.
The sea breeze may have not blown its soft kisses yet the place was still simply relaxing! We enjoyed each part of the park before we left at midnight.
It’s so nice to have a place such as the Manila Baywalk. The people of Manila and all its visitors should take an active role of keeping it.
Come and don't miss the chance of exploring Manila's unique charm and beauty—The Baywalk!
