1.2 Heraldry becomes symbolic
1.2.1 Transition from physical to symbolic
Before long heraldry became a system of symbolism independent of the
need to identify knights and eventually it outlived the era of knights
and armours. One consequence is that heraldry was no longer for warriors
only and arms were granted also to burghers, clergy, cities, and corporate
bodies.

Another consequence of the change from physical to symbolic heraldry is the introduction of new elements to the heraldic achievement such as supporters, crowns, mottoes and orders of chivalry insignia.
